Valheim 1.0 New Enemies: Gammeltroll & Eyeless One Guide
Valheim 1.0 adds Deep North enemies: Gammeltroll, Eyeless One, Barka, Elaking, Hexen, Krigen, Fallen Warrior and Pulp swarm. Where they spawn, what they drop.
Valheim 1.0 adds ten new enemies to the Deep North, confirmed by Iron Gate's official notes: Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen, Hexahedric Pulp, Shapeless Pulp and Tiny Pulp. Gammeltrolls dominate the surface and petrify on death, so bring Ember Charges. Elaking and Eyeless One lurk in Winding Tunnels; Hexen and Krigen guard Mörkhalla. Iron Gate published no HP or damage numbers, so only behavior and drops are described here.
Valheim 1.0 closed five years of Early Access with the Deep North, the game’s eighth and final biome — and with it a full roster of new hostiles. The Deep North generates at the far northern edge of a world, a frozen expanse that conceals abandoned Viking settlements and two dungeon types, and it is also where the recurring Jotun invasion event plays out. Iron Gate’s official patch notes name the new enemies verbatim, but they publish no stat numbers. This guide lists every confirmed new enemy, where it shows up, and what it drops, based strictly on the official notes and hands-on reporting. Where a number would normally go, it is left blank rather than guessed.
The Deep North Enemy Roster
Iron Gate’s 1.0 announcement confirms ten new enemies. The table below groups them by where they appear, using the official names and the drop lists reported by hands-on coverage.
| Enemy | Where it appears | Notable drops | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gammeltroll | Deep North surface (open world) | Bloodgold, Stone, Petrified Tissue | Dominant surface threat; petrifies on death |
| Barka | Deep North overworld | Frozen Branch, Wood, Frostcore, Barka Trophy | Giant tree-like creature frozen in ice |
| Fallen Warrior | Confirmed name only | — | Behavior not described in available sources |
| Elaking | Winding Tunnels (dungeon) | Mould: Intricate Key, Elaking Hair Bundle, Elaking Trophy | Roams at night, weak to fire |
| Eyeless One | Winding Tunnels (dungeon) | Long Claws, Eyeless One Trophy | Bursts from underground for heavy hits |
| Hexen | Mörkhalla (dungeon), then overworld | Nornathread, Caller moulds, Hexen Trophy | Mage-type, very high damage |
| Krigen | Mörkhalla (dungeon) | Vanguard moulds, Leather Straps, Memorial Coal, Krigen Trophy | Melee bruiser |
| Hexahedric Pulp | Mörkhalla (reported) | Pulp Trophy, pulp materials | One of three Pulp variants |
| Shapeless Pulp | Mörkhalla | BlobMarkmini, Dead Pulp, Tiny Pulp, Pulp Trophy | Immune to Poison, “fairly easy” |
| Tiny Pulp | Spawned by other Pulps | Pulp materials | Smallest Pulp variant |
The Deep North also adds passive wildlife — Seal, Baby Seal, Writhan and the Moose Calf — plus the tameable, rideable Moose. Those are not enemies, but they matter because their drops feed the same crafting chain. See the Deep North & Kall Fimbulbringer guide for the boss and biome flow.
Surface Threats: Gammeltroll & Barka
The two enemies you will meet the moment you step into the Deep North’s open fields are the Gammeltroll and the Barka.
Gammeltroll is described in press hands-on sessions as the biome’s dominant surface enemy — ancient trolls that migrated north as they aged and were transformed by the frozen ground into something far larger and slower than the Black Forest trolls. The single most important mechanic: when a Gammeltroll dies it does not drop loot. It turns to stone. To harvest materials you must break the petrified carcass with Ember Charges, throwable explosives — a standard pickaxe does not work. Arriving without Ember Charges means Gammeltroll kills yield nothing, which gates access to part of the biome’s crafting progression (they are the source of Bloodgold). They are also reported to hurl entire tree trunks as a long-range projectile, a reach unlike anything the Swamp or Ashlands send at you.
Barka are giant, tree-like creatures frozen into the ice. Hands-on coverage describes them dealing very serious damage and being weak to fire. They always drop a Frozen Branch, one of the most essential new crafting items, along with Wood, Frostcore and a Barka Trophy.
Underground: Winding Tunnels — Elaking & Eyeless One
The first dungeon type, Winding Tunnels, is an underground maze of tight turns that limits dodge room and makes it easy to lose your bearings. Two of the new enemies concentrate here.
Elaking roam mostly at night and are described as taking increased fire damage. They are important because they drop Mould: Intricate Key, which is required to craft an Intricate Key for late-game progression. They also drop an Elaking Hair Bundle and an Elaking Trophy.
Eyeless One is the more dangerous of the pair. It hides underground and waits for the moment to exit and deal very serious damage in its vicinity. It drops Long Claws, which are used to craft fist weapons. If “valheim eyeless one” brought you here, the short version is: expect an ambush enemy in cramped spaces, so listen for the tell and keep an escape route behind you.
Mörkhalla Dungeon: Hexen & Krigen
The second, larger dungeon type (Mörkhalla) has more complex room layouts, some inside fortified structures. Two heavy hitters guard it.
Hexen are described as mage-type monsters that deal an insanely high amount of damage — one preview even recommends turning off camera shake, because every attack rocks the screen. They are found in Mörkhalla and, once you have visited one, begin appearing in the overworld as well. Drops include Nornathread, a Hexen Trophy, and the Caller armor moulds (Robes, Headdress, Trousers of the Caller).
Krigen is a melee creature with very serious damage output. Defeating it has a chance to drop the Vanguard armor moulds (Chestpiece, Hood, Trousers of the Vanguard) — reported as one of the best armor sets in the game — plus Leather Straps, Memorial Coal and a Krigen Trophy. Farming Krigen is the path to the Vanguard set.
The Pulp Swarm: Hexahedric, Shapeless & Tiny Pulp
The three “Pulp” entries are slimy creatures associated with Mörkhalla. Shapeless Pulp is reported immune to Poison and “fairly easy” to defeat, dropping BlobMarkmini, Dead Pulp, Tiny Pulp and a Pulp Trophy. Tiny Pulp is spawned by the other Pulps rather than found on its own, and Hexahedric Pulp is the third variant. All three share a single Pulp Trophy in the official notes.
Fallen Warrior
Fallen Warrior is named in Iron Gate’s official ten-enemy list, but the sources reviewed for this guide did not describe its spawn location or behavior. Treat its specifics as [UNCONFIRMED] until a datamined or official breakdown is published.

How to Prepare
- Pack Ember Charges before the Deep North. Without them, Gammeltrolls are a waste of effort and Bloodgold stays locked.
- Bring fire damage. Multiple new enemies (Barka, Elaking, Moose) are reported weak to fire; fire arrows and fire weapons pull double duty.
- Carry Poison resist carefully. Shapeless Pulp is immune to Poison, so don’t lean on poison builds in Mörkhalla.
- Scout dungeons, don’t rush. Winding Tunnels and Mörkhalla punish reckless movement; clear sightlines and keep an exit.
- Use the console to learn the map first. The 1.0
findbiomeandfindbiometpdev commands (see the console commands guide) can locate the Deep North and dungeons if you are debugging a world. Note that using devcommands flags your character and can disable achievements until you opt back in.
Because Iron Gate has not published enemy stats, the best “numbers” you can plan around are the drops and the qualitative threat level above. For terrain and seed planning ahead of a Deep North trip, the Seed Viewer shows how your world generates.
Frequently Answered Questions
How many new enemies did Valheim 1.0 add?
Iron Gate's official 1.0 patch notes name exactly ten new enemies: Barka, Elaking, Eyeless One, Fallen Warrior, Gammeltroll, Hexen, Krigen, Hexahedric Pulp, Shapeless Pulp and Tiny Pulp.
What is special about the Gammeltroll?
Gammeltrolls are the dominant surface threat of the Deep North. According to hands-on previews, they turn to stone when killed and yield nothing unless you break the petrified carcass with Ember Charges, throwable explosives. They are also described hurling entire tree trunks as a long-range attack.
Where do I find the Eyeless One and Elaking?
Both appear inside the Winding Tunnels dungeon. Eyeless Ones hide underground and burst out to deal heavy damage; Elaking roam at night and drop the Mould: Intricate Key needed for late-game crafting.
Does Iron Gate publish enemy stats like HP and damage?
No. The official 1.0 notes name the enemies and their drops but publish no health, damage, resistance or drop-rate numbers. Any specific stat you see elsewhere is unverified unless it cites datamined game files.
What do Hexen and Krigen drop?
Hexen drop Nornathread and the Caller armor moulds (Robes, Headdress, Trousers) plus a Hexen Trophy. Krigen can drop the Vanguard armor moulds (Chestpiece, Hood, Trousers), Leather Straps, Memorial Coal and a Krigen Trophy.
